Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is a custom itinerary best for me?
A. If you wish to go to destinations not covered by European Institute catalog programs, this might be the best option for you. Many teachers enjoy the creative process of creating their own itinerary and our skilled Custom Itinerary team love helping nurture this process.

Q. How much should I include in my itinerary?
A. Sometimes less is more. The temptation to include too much can lead to a whirlwind tour in which the students are too exhausted to appreciate anything! This is where the depth of experience of our Custom Itinerary department is invaluable in pacing the tour correctly for you.

Q. When should I use trains?
A. Overnight trains are an excellent way of covering long distances whilst you sleep. The journey from Paris to Madrid would be rather overwhelming without one! However, they do take a physical toll. It would be unwise to include more than one overnight train a trip.

It is often a great idea to take the marvelous TGV trains in France which bring the South of France so close to Paris. Bear in mind, however, that it can add to your cost.

Q. How many people do I need?
A. The European Institute has no hard and fast rule on this. The fewer participants you have, the higher the cost will be, so in general 15 would be a minimum group size. However, itineraries that have don't use local or long distance buses very much can often be less expensive to operate. Ask your Custom Itinerary team member for his advice on your particular tour.

Q. How can I keep the cost of my program down?
A. Internal flights are usually expensive in Europe. Further, your choice of international gateway can add a lot to the basic cost of your itinerary. Our staff will be happy to advise you on the best gateways for your itinerary. Weekend departures are best avoided , if possible.

Our staff will be happy to discuss ways of saving money on your program. Whilst removing a visit to the Louvre won't make a huge difference to your program cost, cutting a day from your program will.

Q. How far can our bus travel in one day?
A. European law lays down strict guidelines for bus driver hours. Our team will be happy to give you the exact details of what is possible on any given day in any given tour. In any case, you will want to avoid long days on the bus as they wear out your students' enthusiasm very quickly. Our experienced team will help you to choose the more interesting country roads rather than the freeway, whenever possible.

"I have been designing my own student tours for 15 years now and then you contacted me last winter. I was amazed at the depth of knowledge your custom itinerary team displayed. Your suggestions of taking the Grossglocknerstrasse (the sensational pass over the Austrian Alps), together with the overnight in Bolzano, made our tour really special." Steve Cochrane, TX
